The best time of day for a writer to be productive depends on the writers themselves, as well as a few outside factors. Some writers sometimes think that they can only write in the middle of the night, while others have to wake up at 5 am in the morning to get their writing done.
To be productive, a writer needs a few conditions. The most important of is of course the actual time to write and also to be able to write without any interruptions. There are times when ideas are appearing one after the other and you can barely type fast enough to get them all down. How awful to have to stop your train of thought to let the dog out or answer telephones.
The best time for writers to be productive will be then be the time of day when they are least likely to be interrupted and when they have a stretch of quiet time for themselves. Yes, sometimes the only time when writers have the time to write is at 5 am in the morning!
Once you have set time aside to write without interruptions, do not waste it! Do not surf the Internet or start reading your e-mails. Leave that to the times when you do not mind being interupted. Switch on the computer or laptop and start writing.
A writer can be more productive if she writes in a certain place like the library or a coffeshop. Writing away from home is sometimes a good idea because you will not be tempted to do a load of washing while you are waiting for the muse. And then the closets need cleaning out or the bathroom should be regrouted.
Treat your writing time as important. If you are serious about it, others will take their cue from you and also respect the fact that you need to write. Expect yourself to be productive in your writing and you will be. No article will get written if you wake up at 5 am to see what is on television. If you have set time aside to write, use that time productively.
Another way to be a productive writer is to have an establised writing routine. Once you have identified the best time to be write, write every day. Make writing such an established part of your daily routine that you cannot not write. The bestselling author Elizabeth George wrote in her book "Write Away" that she evens writes when she is on a booktour.
The best time of day for a writer to be productive is any time. It is up to you to work on where and when it is the best time and place to write. Then stick to it, and write and write and write.
