Let me be myself.
I came into your world just as I am.
I made no promises to be anything more.
I even asked you, "Is this what you want?"
I gave no assurances that I could change.
You accepted me just as I am.
You promised me you wanted nothing more.
You even said, "I know what I see."
You assured me you were fine with that.
The longer I stayed in your world,
The more you forced, the more you demanded,
The more you wanted me to become,
Someone I wasn't, someone I despised.
You took my spirit and crushed it with your might,
You took my freedom and sealed it with chains,
You took my laughter and gave me despair,
You took my life and made it your own.
I see her dark hair, brown eyes and thin lips.
She looks just like me but is she really me?
It's a reflection in a mirror but it's somebody else.
She seems so familiar but I don't know this girl.
The thoughts in her head, the things that she does,
They are not the same things that I would have done.
The things she believes, the way she behaves,
They are not what I would have believed.
How did I come to be this person?
How could I have lost so much that I know?
I look at you now and ask only this:
Please, let me be myself again.

Dare I step aside or merely walk the brazen path?
I know not, either way, what tide it brings.
Perhaps I've not
