Selecting the right Christmas girl for your girlfriend is a tricky business requiring careful consideration. Pick right with a knock it out of the ballpark gift and you will likely receive that hoped for reciprocation. A gift that misfires can result in a disappointed brave face or downright sullenness. There are many determining factors in choosing a gift such as duration and direction of a relationship and depth of feeling. Cost is always an issue especially now in the current recession when money is tight. Good news for shoppers are lower prices.

If you are not in love or only been dating for a short period of time, then a gift can be of a more generalized less expensive nature. For instance, if your girlfriend whom you have been seeing for few months is a "Sex and the City" fan who does not have any boxed DVD sets, this is a thoughtful gift stating you noticed what she likes and she did not have it. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the long term relationship when every man knows what special gift his girlfriend really wants. It is a cliche but an engagement ring and Christmas marriage proposal is a bulletproof gift nine times out of ten.

Jewelry is the most surefire girlfriend pleasing gift. Gold and silver necklaces and bracelets. A nice watch. Some sort of gemstone earrings. Many women appreciate antique jewelry such as a cameo or pendant. Never give shoes, purses or clothing to a woman unless it is a high end big name item she can exchange for something else. Intimate apparel is best left to birthdays and Valentine's Day. Giving a gift as a main present screams so thought at all but can make good stocking stuffers or a gift card to some favorite store of your girlfriend looks good tucked into a card.

Kitchen appliances. No way. A paid day at a beauty spa. Yes. For those with big bucks, nothing says romance like a Carribbean cruise for two. If in tune with her artistic taste, perhaps a painting or some other art object. Is there something your girlfriend has always wanted to do but never got around to it like flying a plane or parachute jumping? Make a gift of lessons. A subscription to the beer of the month club is not going to be a hit but one of those gift baskets of exotic soaps, shampoos and toiletries is a good idea. Expensive perfume is heavily advertised but there is a change of a gift of perfume backfiring is she does not like the scent.

What if you girlfriend hails from another city or state. misses her family and cannot afford to visit. The gift of a round trip plane ticket home would mean more to her than a piece of jewelry. The cannot miss and easiest time consuming gift for a girlfriend is jewelry while the imaginative present could reach deep into her heart.
