The power of positive thinking and attitude

by J.G.R.

Stay positive. Two simple words you probably have never really given a second thought to. However, recent research has been showing that the more positive you are, the more good things are probably going to head your way. Just about anywhere you look, whether it's self-help books, training programs, or exercise routines, the most important aspect they preach is to be positive. However, no one ever truly cares to explain deeply as to why, or what steps you can take to be more positive.

Let's get right into it, why should you be more positive? Ask yourself this first, Have you ever seen anyone you envied greatly? Someone who seemed to have exactly what you wanted, or someone who seemed to just be completely in charge of their life? Now ask yourself this, on most of the days you see these people, does it look like they're very negative? More than likely they're pretty positive. It's no coincidence that these people who seem more healthy, or seem to have many good things going for them and are well off aren't too negative about things in their life. However, are they positive because they have such a good life, or the opposite? You'll find that most of these people have their shares of problems, just as you or I do, the trick is they don't let that keep them down.

Positive thinking has been shown in many studies to be a great help in reducing stress, which in turn not only helps a person live longer healthier lives (stress has been known to increase blood pressure, which inevitably leads to heart disease), their ability to cope, memory, cognition, emotional states, among many other things. Reduce your stress, and you'll find you're better able to cope with the multitude of things you have to do in any given day.

Positive people are also usually the ones who get ahead in the workplace or otherwise. Would you want to hire someone or give someone an opportunity who mopes around, complained about every little thing, or got angry when just about anything went wrong? Probably not. Positive attitudes in people have been shown to increase in problem solving with individuals, not by some magic turn around of cognition, but rather because negative people only seem to focus on how many problems they have instead of looking toward a broader view and implementing fixes to those problems.

So what steps can you take? The first step is admitting your negative. This is where people fall short of their goal. They assume that simply saying to themselves that they are positive is
