The FIFA World Cup is a great football championship. It's hard to say whether the 2010 World Cup will be a great World Cup, but certainly there are a few likely potential outcomes worth considering relating firstly to qualification, and then the final event.
It should be noted that the final 32 teams is not entirely clear. Currently, a few teams have qualified for the event but not all 32. While England, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Holland, Italy and co have booked their place in the finals other good teams like France, Portugal, Argentina and Russia have not yet done so.
Argentina will qualify for the FIFA World Cup. They have not yet, but a team with their talent should make the finals and they remain reasonably well placed to qualify. So, they should qualify.
In addition to this, I have a feeling that the Rep of Ireland might make the finals. They are still on course for qualification and they have shown that they are quite a good football team. While not quite level with the likes of Argentina, they do have a few good players.
Will France and Portugal qualify also? I would predict that at least one of those two teams should and will qualify. On paper, when you consider that Portugal have some great players like Ronaldo they can and should qualify. France may not be quite so good, and I would say are less likely of the two to qualify.
Qualification matters aside, the finals of the World Cup could be interesting. Do not expect the European teams to dominate, because it is not so likely they will. Noting that this World Cup is not in Europe, so it is likely that at least one or perhaps more non-European teams will make the semi-finals.
When we talk of potential winners there are a few teams of note. Spain are the current European Champions, and as such could be the most potent European team of the moment and are potential winners. However, their World Cup record is not especially good but they should still do well.
Brazil will probably be the favorites again having topped their qualification group. Even in a post Ronaldo era, they still have fine attacking players that will score goals. Overall, if they can defend as well as they attack then Brazil always have a good chance.
However, Argentina are also a very good team. Expecting that they will indeed qualify, with the players they have they can win the World Cup.
I consider those teams to be the most likely potential winners. I do not expect that either Italy or Germany will be able to win the World Cup, but could still go far. While Holland could actually be more likely winners, with more consistent form.
In the end, I can only predict that a non-European team will win the FIFA World Cup. So that leaves either Brazil or Argentina as the most likely world champions. In addition to this, regarding qualification matters Argentina, Rep of Ireland and Portugal will qualify for the finals.
