Short stories: Soul mates: This is a life lesson on men. A creation of the perfect man. This story is set in the Louisiana bayou in the deep south. It is told by the daughter. This short story is rustic in nature.
Mama and me sat by the crackling fire I lay on the rug with my face in the palms of my hands supported by propped elbows. I could feel the heat as it toasted my tawny cheeks. I got consumed in the daydream of flame and blaze thinking about the perfect boy for me. "Mama do you believe in soulmates?" Mama smiled in her husky voice and Louisiana accent, "Yeah baby I believe in soulmates and the making of a perfect man for each of us." I knew there was a lesson in this somewhere. That's the way mama seemed to teach me the ways of the world. Everything in lesson. "O.K. baby upstairs you gots to get to bed now. It's gonna be an early day tomarrow." Mama came in my room at 3:30 a.m.. I pulled the covers over my head as she said come on baby, i'm gonna teach you 'bout soulmates and the perfect man. I slipped into my boots and a sweatshirt. Mama handed me a coffee cup. There was no coffee in it though it was empty. I looked at her confused. "Put some of that soot from the fireplace in that cup !
Only 'bout half full now girl" I did as mama instructed. We proceeded outside. The dew on the grass was cold and wet. Still having the cup in my hand,"Mama...What do you want me to do with this?" Mama sat down next to the resorvoir that caught and held rain water. Well baby mama grabbed the coffee cup and set it down. "See baby the perfect man can sometimes be cold but when in love he burns with fire and passion. That is what the cup of ash represents." Mama poured the ash onto the ground. Mama scooped a cup full of the reservoir water. She held it up. "When creating the perfect man baby you are both going to cry tears of joy and sadness through the process." Mama poured the cup of water onto the pile of ash.
The sun started to rise mama said, "Just like the sun the perfect man will rise to greet you shining brightly giving him brazen energy and strength to work hard and through all things during the day. And he will settle with you during the night and protect you under the moonlight." Mama stood up she spread her arms and sang a song of joy and praise. As the sun was rising upon mamas creation I could not believe my eyes. Low and behold the most perfect, beautiful, strong, specimen of a man began to emerge taking his rightful place in the earth.
He was prime. We circled around him looking him over up and down. "Mama why isn't he talking or moving?" Ahhh! This is the magic right here. Mama leaned over she touched her lips to the man she breathed into him life. He literally jumped to sucking the soul out of her. In an instant mama was lying on the ground. She was not breathing. Our beautiful maiden that helped out with the cleaning, cooking, and everything else around the farm came running over to help mama. There was no response.Mama was gone.
The lesson in the story is and was simple. Once you expend your life, energy, and soul over creating the perfect man. Once you have gone through the trials and tribulations of helping him obtain perfection,he takes off with the pretty maiden!
