There is no such thing as a free lunch, but there are things you can do get at least some free music, without alluding to blatant online piracy. So, here's my top three:
1 - eMusic.com
eMusic.com is a subscription site, but they are constantly giving away free intro offers. For example, as of 2/12/07, here's 25 free tracks: http://www.emusic.com/promo/new25free/index.html (NOT an affiliate link). Subscribe, download the DRM free music and then cancel before you get charged for anything. The music is yours to keep and legal. You can repeat this as much as you want!
2 - Friends!
You use iTunes and you have friends (you DO have friends, right?). load up itunes on a laptop, drop in their disc, and hit rip.
3 - AllofMp3.com
This is legal gray area: Allofmp3 is set up in Russia and complies with russian copyright laws.... which aren't as strong as they are here. You get DRM free mp3s from their website, they have a large selection, and they're cheap: $3 per album. You can afford that, and you don't waste any time.
4 - Podcasts and Free Single of the Week
The podcast section of the iTunes library has a wide selection of various show that have free music in them. Plus, iTunes has a free single of the week on their main page in the market place.
5 - Free Mozart!
Brought to you by Swedish Radio: www.sr.se/podradio/xml/sr2_mozart.xml
Free and 100% Legal.
