The development and constant enlargement of the European Union is an important aspect that affects all the citizens of the member states. The effects of the EU decisions can be perceived in all areas of political, social or economic activity. This is why it is important for EU citizens to be well informed about the EU policy and its goals, in order to take advantage of the opportunities they are being offered and understand the general dynamics of the EU.

The European Union has abolished many barriers imposed to the population of the member states. Nowadays, it's easier than ever to travel, work and even establish yourself in another country belonging to the EU, because of the simplification of bureaucratic procedures. You therefore have a better chance at moving to a country of your choice, regardless of your motivation: a better standard of living, more professional or educational opportunities, a more pleasant climate etc.

Being able to roam freely around the EU will also help you to experience other cultures more closely and learn about their habits and traditions. It has never been easier to get involved with foreign people and acquire an authentic impression about their lifestyle and mentality.

Because of the single economic market established by the EU, your knowledge about EU policy and political affairs will make you a more valuable employee in business. Companies from different member states find it a lot easier to interact, exchange goods and expand their businesses in other territories.

The monetary union is also an important aspect of the EU. By understanding the power of the euro and how to use it in your favor, you will be able to make more informed decisions when getting a loan to buy a property or car etc. Being paid in euro is an advantage nowadays because it is currently one of the strongest currencies and of course, it dominates the EU.

EU regulations also have an effect on various areas such as protecting the environment, agriculture, healthcare etc. For example, in regard to the environment, the EU has taken important steps to combat pollution and global warming. The Water Framework Directive commits member states to improve the quality of all their water bodies. There are also plans to reduce the level of pollution by introducing biofuel and regulations that will significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Other regulations and directives have affected the prices you pay for food, gasoline or other products and the EU will continue introducing new regulations that will establish economic balance and improve the standard of living in all the member states.

Last but not least, it is important to know the basics about the EU institutions, in order to make informed, good choices when your vote is needed in a referendum etc.

The issues that arise in the European Union affect all the member states as a whole, but they also have repercussions for the individual. Each of the EU citizens must acquire a basic understanding of the EU, in order to be able to fully enjoy the benefits of being part of Europe.
