How children learn

Learning....

I love to see a child learn something new whether it be a new experience, a new word, a new game, maybe even a new type of food, they just amaze me.

But it is we who could learn from them, children have an amazing way of adapting, when they are stressed they cry, when they are tired they nap, when they feel curious they investigate.

A natural desire born with them to grow, as teachers you see that the desire is there it is just our job to nurture it. To lead them in the right direction.

As a home school parent I have tried different methods to teaching, traditional curriculum and a controversial "unschooled method" which is learner directed.

What this means is you follow the child's natural curiosity and desire to learn. They ask a question you run with it and get them as many answers as possible. I will tell you I was scared to death of this method because you feel you HAVE to be putting in all sort of information into the child's brain 24/7.

But I have quickly learned it boosts their esteem and provides them with an incredible LOVE of learning.
As we get older some of us loose that desire, we figure that's it I have learned all there is to learn I'm done.
This couldn't be farthest from the truth.

Life is about constantly growing and learning more and more.
Not just academically, but about life, Love, Art, Music, sports, whatever catches your interest at a particular moment.

Buddha once said: Even the deepest pool stagnates without action.
Children learn best when this action is allowed to flow freely through them on into adult hood.
