Poetry: Cats

by Belinda Long

CAT'S CAN COUNT OUR BLESSINGS

I've been thinking a lot about cats.

Mostly of their fabled nine lives.

I can't figure if this trait is enviable,

Or a trait I would come to despise.

Would it be great to have a do-over?

Would that start to get on my nerves?

What if my mistake was stupid at best?

A second chance I didn't deserve?

Would life no longer hold wonder?

Would there be nothing left to explore?

Would I soon forget the value of life,

If I knew I still had eight more?

I guess nine lives is nothing to envy.

No wonder cats always look so depressed!

There would be no excitement if I had nine lives.

In hindsight, cats must think we're blessed!
