Thanks to one too many banal Kate Hudson movies the term chick flick can strike fear in a man's heart. Fuelled by a desire to avoid rhapsodies about shoes and a deep hatred of Matthew McConaughey, your average guy will avoid anything tagged with the chick-flick label. But there are plenty of reasons not to. Here's just a few of the most convincing:

MEAN GIRLS: A hilarious take on school-girl cliques scripted by 30 Rock's Tina Fey. This is a sharp satire everyone will get something out of, regardless of gender.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY: Probably the most famous of all chick flicks, this is just as suited to the guys as the girls. Don't believe me? Alright, so the set-up is pure chick-flick heaven, but it's the way the story is handled that makes it guy friendly. This isn't a film about a desperate woman looking for love, it's an examination of relationships, told from both sides of the gender equation. With Billy Crystal adding his hilarious touches there's no reason for guy's to avoid it.

WHIP IT!: A super-charged, action-packed sports movie that guys should love. Ellen Page is a chick flick heroine you can get behind, she's so witty and geeky.

BRIDGET JONES DIARY: One of the best made and funniest chick flicks in recent memory, this is a comedy for all comers. The hilariously pathetic fight scene between Hugh Grant and Colin Firth alone is enough to make it worth your time.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA: A film about fashion. No thanks, right? Well dig a little deeper and you'll find a story about the boss from hell that resonates with anyone. Feature's a knock-out performance by Meryl Streep. Don't be fooled into thinking this is a girly movie about dresses, it's actually a damn good comedy.

AMELIE: A very funny Gallic romantic-comedy, this is a strange but wonderful little film. This is more a film about life than romance and as such it's one no guy should miss. As the title character Audrey Tatou is astonishing. Just try not to fall in love with her.

A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT: From the director of the above Amelie comes this darkly funny and tragic tale of divided lovers. It's romantic but never for a second saccharine and will have even the most macho man captivated.

10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU: Not just another teen movie, this is an intelligent and well-scripted comedy that has plenty of crude humour for the guys.
