Superstitions regarding marriage and weddings

Most every young girl dreams of the perfect wedding. They picture how wonderful it will be and will do almost anything to ensure it. It is supposed to be the happiest day of their life, one they will always remember with fondness and joy. Like may other things in life, there are numerous superstitions surrounding this event. Those that can bring either good or bad luck. Ones some brides and grooms believe fully. Quite possibly, the most well known wedding superstition, and the one most practiced is the age old, "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". It is believed that for the bride to wear all of these things, the couple will have good luck not only during the wedding but in the marriage also.

One of the first things done for any wedding is choosing the date. There are months and days of the week that are considered better luck than others. Located on www.squidoo.com/wedding_traditions are two poems which tell about both. - "Monday is for health, Tuesday for wealth, Wednesday best of all, Thursday brings crosses, Friday brings losses; but Saturday, no luck at all" - "Married when the year is new, he'll be loving kind and true. When February birds do mate, you wed nor dread your fate. If you wed when March winds blow, joy and sorrow both you'll know. Marry in April when you can, joy for maiden and for man. Marry in the month of May, and you'll surely rue the day. Marry when June roses grow, over land and sea you will go. Those who in July do wed, must labor for their daily bread. Whoever wed in August be, many a change is sure to see. Marry in September's shine, your living will be rich and fine. If in October you do marry, love will come but riches tarry. If you wed in bleak November, only joys will come, remember. When December snows fall fast, marry and true love will last."

Other Wedding Superstitions - The brides veil is thought to protect her from evil spirits that are jealous of happy people. - Rain on a wedding day can be seen in two ways. Some believe it means the couple will be showered with good luck, while others say rain on a wedding day foretells many tears. It is believed to be good luck: - For the bride to see a dove on the way to the church because doves mate for life. - For the bride to cross paths with a black cat on the way to the church. - For the groom to see a pigeon, wolf, or goat on the way to the church. - For the bride to find a spider in her wedding gown. - For snow to fall because it is a sign of fertility. - To marry during a full moon. Many people are aware of the throwing of the bouquet and garter, and whoever catches it will be the next to marry. Likewise, they know about the bride and groom feeding each other wedding cake. This is done to symbolize the couple always taking care of each other.

Whether normally superstitious or not, may couples seem to pay more attention to those involving their wedding. Maybe it's because they don't want to take any chances. Or, maybe, it is because there is a small amount of superstitious belief in almost everyone.
