Xeriscaping explained

One of the first things about Xeriscaping one should understand, although by far not the most important, is how to pronounce the word! Treat the x like a z, and you can be one of the proud few who say it correctly! Also remember, it is not called zeroscaping, as so many think. However, zeroscaping is actually a very accurate term (and becoming an accepted term as well) when you understand the purpose and practices of Xeriscaping. How is Xeriscaping explained?

Xeriscaping itself is a registered trademark of Denver Water, in Denver, Colorado, created in 1981. The concept was developed in Colorado as a way to promote and facilitate the efficient use of the state's water. Today many states have adopted the water wise practices involved in Xeriscaping. Educational programs, informational classes and seminars are held everywhere in hopes of encouraging home owners, businesses and water providers to initiate the basic and simple process of Xeriscaping.

An easily understandable definition of Xeriscaping is, landscaping that conserves water and protects the environment. There are seven basic principles that landscape professionals follow. You can apply the same principles to your yard, no matter where you live, and save time, money and water.

1. Soil analysis: You can get a professional analysis of your soil by taking soil samples from different parts of your yard. Bring the samples to your county cooperative extension service, and they can determine the pH balance of your soil. This will enable you to select the best plants for your landscape. If you don't know where your extension office is, use the following website to locate one: http://www.csrees.usda.gov/Extension.

2. Plan and design your landscape: Base your plant selection on those that will work best for your yard. What plants need full sun? What plants enjoy shade? Where are these areas in your yard, and how many plants can they accommodate? Don't forget to factor in growth, and the proper amount of room each plant will eventually require.

3. Choose the plants: Remember, part of the Xeriscaping concept is low maintenance. Choose the proper plants for the proper setting. Consider each plant's need for sun, shade, moisture, and soil. Be aware of salt and cold tolerance.

4. Use grass wisely: Grass is by far the most water-intensive plant. So you want to use it sparingly, like for a child's play area or a pet enclosure.

5. Irrigate efficiently: Place plants with equal water needs together. Select the correct watering technique. Drip-lines release water in a slow fashion, with very little evaporation. On the other end of the scale are pop-ups or rotary heads, which spray large volumes of water, much of which evaporates. Use these only for your grassy areas.

6. Use mulch: Mulch holds moisture in the soil, and discourages weeds from growing. It can consist of wood shavings, pine needles, bark or leaves. There are many permanent types of mulch available today, made of recycled rubber. These will last longer, and need not be replenished as often as their natural counterparts.

7. Maintain your yard: Through Xeriscaping you've cut maintenance down by hours. However, you'll still have to prune, trim, weed, mow and irrigate as needed. Healthy plants need not be fertilized as much, and don't require pesticides or fungicides. This is good for the environment, as it keeps these poisons out of run-off water, helping to keep our rivers, lakes, streams and oceans free of pollutants.
