After reading the other articles in this topic, I actually had to stop and think about my own personal stance on the workings, and the ethics of love spells and related invocations. While I myself have never attempted to cast such a spell, or even felt the desire to ask another to do it for me, I have to think Why? Why do I feel like this? Why do I feel that magic to gain love is morally wrong? I think in this article, I will address my own issues, as well as answering the questions of those reading this topic.
First, explanation of love magic in general.
Love magic, and so in turn love spells, are spells which set out deliberately to bring love, or one of its derivatives (friendship, companionship, etc) into the life of oneself, or that of another, such as a friend, relative, or somebody who pays good money. These spells often entail cliched ingredients such as roses (beauty), red (love) ribbons (bound), and cinnamon (for passion).
My issue with Magic for Love.
Magic is a tool. It is completely neutral, and I know and understand this. There is no black, no white, just an endless spectrum of colour (or grey, dependent on perspective, and mood). However, I still feel that there is something naturally wrong with trying to force somebody to love you.
Consider me casting a spell so I am loved by X. However, X and Y are happily in Love already, and Y is my best friend/sister/brother whatever. How unfair is that. I either tear X's heart in two, Break Y's heart and confidence, or ruin a relationship with all of them.
Also, then there is the aspect of free will and Dominance. What right does any human being, let alone witch, have to control the thoughts or actions of another human being? None. Dominance and Command spells, I have no problem with, in the right situation, for temporary time spans, and with good reason, but for love, I think it is a frivolous and immoral expenditure of ones own energies.
There is of course the backfiring, and consequence of actions, which I think is also rather off-putting. I am not speaking of three-fold law or Rule of Three, or even Karma and Dharma, but rather the mundane, such as the fact he snores, she picks her toenails, he has a violent attitude, she is passive aggressive, and so on. This is not the way I want to find out somebody is not the right match for me. I would rather find out after speaking, and being on a mutual basis, without any witchcraft clouding either of our judgements, or binding us together.
My Final Verdict.
Magic, witchcraft, spellwork, all come in really handy in my every day life, but there are somethings which I refuse to touch. And Lovecraft is one of them I think. Potions to make you more attractive, spells to boost confidence, a prayer to let yourself be known, or an incantation to draw attention to yourself, these are fine, in fact I have done all of the above mentioned, and I felt better for it. But knowing that I had just trapped somebody to me, like a butterfly in a net, I wouldn't be able to live with myself. Love by Magic is not true love, rather a facade, a facsimile, an illusion, and a shallow one at that.
Be yourself, and let the magic flow, and you will find people flock to you without the need for charms or hexes, and keep your energies for important things, like protection, or healing that broken heart.
Brightest Blessings, and this Witch Signs Out.
