Refer to Christianity as a threat and Christians will label you 'unGodly.' People who consider themselves to be of the Christian religion, but not actually practicing Christians, will defend them. The face Christianity likes to show the world is one of brotherly love, caring, and compassion. Look deeper, and it's frequently not such a pleasant sight. Christianity is based on fear and control. They fear a vengeful god and threats of eternal damnation, and the things they want to control in addition to their own families and other Christians are our government, our schools, our children, our medical care and even our sex lives.
Christianity's bloody past is well known: how the pilgrims came to America for religious freedom and then denied it to everyone else. In this country, native peoples were still being abused as recently as the last century. How many Native American children were beaten in the name of the Lord?
We have laws to protect us from religious persecution, so we no longer fear torture and imprisonment for failing to conform to the Christian religion. We have groups like the ACLU and Americans United for Separation of Church and State to make sure things stay fair and balanced and to keep Christians from bullying the rest of us.
We must be forever vigilant. The religious right wants to control the government and all aspects of our lives according to their beliefs. This was never more obvious than when George W. Bush was president. Conservative Christians put him in office because 'he started every morning on his knees.' The religious right wanted a president in their pocket and were not particularly interested in his other qualifications. During Bush's time in office, his speeches often contained phrases from hymns, sounding more like sermons than political rhetoric.
Most Christians want prayer in the schools. They have no consideration for children of other religions. They want to control the science and health classes taught in our schools, insisting that creationism and abstinence-only sex education be added to, and in some cases, replace legitimate subjects. How can we stay competitive in the field of science while teaching our children the Earth is only 6,000 years old? Christians have gone so far as to claim dinosaur bones were planted by the Devil to test the true believers. The changes made to the text books and curricula
