Howard Stern has moved to satellite radio, and the only one who seems to really benefit from the move is Stern and his accountants. Of course, humanity is better off with that trash off of the broadcast airwaves, so that's a plus.
I never listened to Howard Stern on the radio, but I caught a few shows on the late night TV version. While it didn't appeal to my tastes, I could see the attraction factor in what he was doing. He had his target audience under his thumb. He also had the TV execs right where he wanted them.
The guaranteed ratings allowed Stern to get away with stunts that would have a lesser DJ tossed out on his big head. Some of that stuff was border-line porn, and the rest was just plain nasty.
Hundreds of thousands of people would tune in to see what Howie would do next. He was always pushing the envelope, and his fans loved it. I can fully understand the attraction for the fans, it's human nature to watch weirdness. It's a side show mentality that causes people to stop and stare at strange things.
I find it hard to believe that the satellite radio moguls didn't see the forest for the trees. They were so focused on getting Stern in their camp that they failed to understand why Stern was the top dog in shock radio. They overlooked the forbidden fruit factor.
What made the show popular was the breaking of the rules. Now there are no rules! How many times can you spew the f-word until it becomes mundane. How many midgets, and lesbian mud wrestlers can you feature, before they too become old hat? It's like a dog chasing a car. When the car stops at the corner, the dog loses interest and forgets why was chasing in the first place.
And to top it all off, the poor slobs(stern fans)have to pay for their amusement now! What a ripoff Stern pulled on his fans. I haven't heard any stats on just how many said to heck with him, but I know a lot of his fans didn't go with him. I wasn't a fan, but if I were, I wouldn't be anymore. That was a dirty trick he pulled. And all for the love of money.
There's not much loyalty in Sternville, when it comes to the ones who made him what he is. He abandoned the very ones who deserve the credit for his fame and fortunes ... oh well, so it goes.
