Tips for creating a good About Me page

by Gordon Hamilton

Quality tips for creating a good About Me page have to include tips regarding what should and should not be included in the About Me page, the style in which the About Me page is written and the extent of the material which should be included in the About Me page. Where any of these three factors are found to be wanting, the end result is likely to be somewhat sub-standard.

The nature of the material included in a good About Me page will in the first instance be determined by the nature of the site upon which the About Me page is to appear. If the About Me page is for a social networking site, it should contain extensive details of one's interests and hobbies, likes and dislikes. If it is for a specialist article writing site, it should include details of why one considers oneself to be an authority on the relevant subject and perhaps what qualifications have been obtained in relation to same. The relevancy of the material in this way is essential if the About Me page is to know its greatest impact and material which is included simply for inclusion's sake should be avoided at all costs.

The style in which the About Me page is written will also depend upon the nature of the hosting site. Social networking About Me pages should be written in a casual style, in the first person, in order that they are most likely to appeal to the recreational Web browser. About Me pages on more specialised sites, however, should be written in the third person. There are two principal reasons for this in that a third person About Me page appears much more professional than a first person one and where one is seeking to attract the attentions of the search engines, one's name spread liberally throughout the About Me page is likely to make the process infinitely more successful.

The extent of any About Me page will to a considerable degree be determined by the quantity of the relevant material available for inclusion. What it should also do, however, is comply with the accepted standard on the particular site. One can easily establish this standard by viewing the About Me pages of some of the more successful members of the site and guidance at least can be obtained in this way.

Creating a good About Me page can very often be the difference between achieving what one wishes to achieve on a site and otherwise and thus full attention must be given to the importance of this task. When completed, however, it is important also to remember to keep the About Me page fresh and up to date if it is to have maximum impact in the long term.
