The good ol' days: Relishing unforgettable memories

THE GOOD OLD DAYS

Many years ago, things were so different. You hear folks over 65/70 talking about the Good Old Days. I'm sure the younger generation thinks that those folks must be senile or just plain crazy. There were no cell phones, computers, rap music, texting, and in the early days, not even television. To the youth of today, times were boring back then. They are entitled to their opinion and they are not to blame for their ignorance. After all, you had to live in both eras to really appreciate the former. The youth of today accuses us of living in the past, but if we didn't have those wonderful memories to draw from, we could not survive in today's fast-paced society where we are deluged with bad news on a daily basis from every source of media available to us.

I have been watching a lot of old movies on television lately and can't help making comparisons. Back then, the movies had a plot and there was no bed-hopping, cussing or constant talk of sex. Most of them had happy endings. Today, if I want to get good and depressed, I can go to the movies. I prefer a love story or a comedy to get my mind off my own problems, not some of the stuff they are showing today. I remember when the book and the movie Peyton Place came out. What a scandalous thing that was. Compared to the movies of today, it was like PollyAnna meets Peter Pan. Very sedate in comparison.

Back in the 'old days', a man's word and a hand shake were as binding as any legal contract. A man had pride and worked for a living; wouldn't accept charity. Bible's were read in a family setting before bedtime. Prayers were said by children with the parents kneeling with them. Parents took their children to church in the family car or walked with them rather than sending them on the church bus on their own.

A man fought for his country with pride because he loved his country and he was honored for it.

You had to earn a compliment or a reward of any kind. Nowadays, a toddler uses the potty and they throw him a party complete with balloons, 'chocolate' cake and all. My friend's grandchild just had such a party with brown balloons, chocolate cake and they called it a 'Poopy Party'. We used the potty because we were told that's what we were supposed to do. We were praised for it but that's as far as it went. We did chores and earned an allowance and if we wanted something we saved up for it or waited until Christmas. These kids today come into the world bellowing, "I want."

A girl's virtue and reputation
