Poetry: Halloween horror

by Denise Baer

Created on: October 08, 2009   Last Updated: October 12, 2009

I woke the eve of Halloween
from noises outside my room.
At the time just barely sixteen
started my adolescent bloom.

Scared what was there beyond the door
I held my breath as it opened.
Surprised to see clothes on the floor,
so I picked them up while scopin'.

Not a soul in sight in the hall
ventured out, and headed downstairs.
Fear took over as I felt small,
creaks echoed from ignored repairs.

From the kitchen rose a smell
nasty enough to pinch my nose.
On the table, watching them swell,
cut and bleeding were two big toes.

A scream echoed throughout the place
making my way to the outside.
In route, I grabbed the table vase
held tight while my breathing subsides.

Laughter came from behind a tree
my brother full of deceit.
Quickly, he stood and tried to flee,
showed vase and agreed to defeat.
