I woke the eve of Halloween
from noises outside my room.
At the time just barely sixteen
started my adolescent bloom.
Scared what was there beyond the door
I held my breath as it opened.
Surprised to see clothes on the floor,
so I picked them up while scopin'.
Not a soul in sight in the hall
ventured out, and headed downstairs.
Fear took over as I felt small,
creaks echoed from ignored repairs.
From the kitchen rose a smell
nasty enough to pinch my nose.
On the table, watching them swell,
cut and bleeding were two big toes.
A scream echoed throughout the place
making my way to the outside.
In route, I grabbed the table vase
held tight while my breathing subsides.
Laughter came from behind a tree
my brother full of deceit.
Quickly, he stood and tried to flee,
showed vase and agreed to defeat.
