Why the Super Smash Bros. series has been successful

The Super Smash Bros. series is a series that is quite unlike any other, but since all of the games in the canon have been published by Nintendo, that really isn't much of a surprise. It is a series that has had great success since the first installment, but again, when the content comes under further review, the large fanbase it has gained and all of the praise it has received seem well deserved. Indeed, the Super Smash Bros. series does something that so few games have been able to achieve in the past: it makes fighting games fun again.

This is probably the biggest reason for its incredible success; it is successful because it is just plain fun. Of course, that's not to say that all fighting games are terrible right from the get go or that fighting games are inherently bad, but the monotonous button mashing and lack of creative spin that plagues a good number of fighting games amount to the game eventually becoming nothing else but boring and tedious. This is where Super Smash Bros. excels and surpasses its competition. With its huge number of characters that rank among Nintendo's most beloved characters (and with more added with each installment), tons of unlockable fighters and stages, and ridiculous amount of items, ranging from the Poke Ball to Kirby's Star Glider, the Super Smash Bros. games have a very high replay value.

Not to mention, one can get hours of enjoyment just by re-staging epic Nintendo battles and even creating new ones. Perhaps you feel its time to give Bowser his due and pound Mario into the ground, or maybe you'd prefer to have Zelda and Link team up once more to take down the evil the Ganondorf. One can pit Mario against Luigi to see which is the better Mario Brother, or, something that's even more paradoxical, Mario vs. Dr. Mario. Put Mario up against Peach to see if the princess really did need Mario to rescue her all of those times. With the advent of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, you can even create the battle of the video game age, throwing Sonic the Hedgehog into the ring with Mario, and see just what mascot is the best. Of course, you can always just pick any character and wail on Jigglypuff for a while, finally getting retribution for all of those annoying times you heard Jigglypuff sing its song, and showing it once and for all that the world has no place for cute little pink puffballs that excel at putting you to sleep.

With all of these match possibilities, it's completely possible to get lost in any Smash Bros. game for hours
