Being a leader at work, even though you are not in a management position, can enhance your job satisfaction.

People will follow a good leader. An individual who is able to inspire, motivate and uplift the spirit of others, possesses all the qualities of a good leader.

If you desire a positive work situation, you can take a leadership role in establishing a positive attitude among your coworkers. By being a role model, displaying an upbeat attitude, you can actually garner the environment you aspire to experience.

Managers make the business decisions for a company, but a strong leader among the employees often sets the tone for overall job satisfaction.

An individual who displays strong leadership qualities is often the prime candidate for consideration when a management position becomes available.

Attributes of a leader, who is not necessarily the manager:

• Sets a good example.

If you arrive at work on time, fulfill your tasks without complaint, face setbacks with an optimistic demeanor, you can influence others in a positive way. You will be an asset to your organization and appreciated by your superiors for making their job easier. Often a model employee will have a positive effect on the attitude of the manager, as well.

• Focuses on solutions

When problems arise, focus on finding a solution, rather than ruminating about the inconvenience of the problem, or pointing fingers at who is to blame. Other workers will follow your lead and your positive attitude could potentially mitigate the possibility of chaos. A good leader lifts the spirits of others, even in a negative situation, rather than bringing them down.

• Appreciates others

When a coworker is doing an outstanding job, be the first to shine a light on his achievements. Give credit when and where it is due. Making others feel valuable and important is an excellent people skill and a characteristic of a strong leader. Treat everyone with respect, be they subordinates, superiors or coworkers, and you will stand out as a leader.

• Volunteers

When a change is imminent, or a new policy is instituted, display enthusiasm regarding the new system. It is human nature to balk at change and when coworkers witness your flexibility and willingness to adapt, they will follow suit and you will be firmly established as a leader.

You do not have to be in a management position to have an impact in your work environment. You only have to display a positive attitude, an open mind and a willingness to allow others to garner deserved accolades, and you will soon discover others looking to you for direction.

You will increase your own job satisfaction, and open up the possibility for future advancement by displaying your leadership qualities in a congenial manner.

You can be a leader at work without actually being a manager. "You can do anything, if you don't mind who gets the credit." (anonymous)
