Unconditional love means "covenant" love and is quite different than conditional or contractual relationships. There are only two kinds of "covenant" love, the first being God's love for us and the second would be that presumably between spouses who vow to love and honor through sickness and health, for richer and poorer until death.
God tells us in the Bible both in the Old and New Testaments that God has made a "covenant" with his people that nothing can come between God's love for us nor pluck us from God's hand. "Neither height nor depth nor prinicipalities nor powers" in otherwords no person, place, thing or spiritual being can stand between the relationship and love God holds for us and we for God. It is hoped that we have made a commitment to love and honor to obey God, but the love between us - unconditional love - does not depend upon it because human beings ever since the fall of mankind in the Garden of Eden have fallen short by sin and God not only understands that this has occurred and will probably continue, but has made a way of salvation to restore mankind to God by the person of Jesus Christ.
Sometimes we hear that parents and children should exercize unconditional love, but that often requires "tough" love. If you know that your child or parent has done something illegal or immoral or downright unsafe or unhealthy it would definitely be better to tell them how to go about fixing the problem. We are not to judge as God judges, simply because God does a much better job of bringing the problem to the attention of the wayward and then taking steps, patiently and lovingly to fix the problem. God can do what those in a loving relationship cannot do or will not do. God can see all sides, weigh them in the balance and offer solutions by incredible means.
Spouses enter into an unconditional love relationship because the marriage bond is sacred - particularly in light of any children. Jesus said it best when asked about divorce: "From the beginning this was not so" for this reason a man and woman should be joined as one which no one can otherwise separate or cast out. In order to have the kind of long-term relationship a marriage requires, the New Testament has given us an overview of what perfect love should be: particularly patience, long-suffering and enduring all things.
God's love for us by covenant means that no matter what we do, God will always love us. If you are thinking murderers and thieves are counted out remember that the thief who was
