How to find work in a recession

Five Things to Do When Looking For Work

What happens when you lose your job and you start looking for another one in this tough economy? I will give you five tips that have helped me with my job search throughout the last few months. 1.) Smile and be confident 2.) Volunteer 3). Keep in touch with friends and Network 4.) Treat yourself to trips to the spa 5.) Never give up and apply to many places.

Smiling is important and when you smile at someone that makes people feel nice. When you meet people your energy will either attract or deflect a person. If you go around feeling like someone has done you wrong and you are unhappy. It is your choice to work yourself out of feeling that way. Things happen to us that are out of our control but we can change what happens next. Sometimes we may not feel like smiling but look at the simplicity of something such as a butterfly. Butterflies may not be very pretty while they are in the cocoon, but once they are out you are greeted by a fast flying creature.

Volunteering is important because you can learn skills, meet people and have fun doing whatever work you chose to do. I am the Shops Sponsor Coordinator for The Granite State Wheelmen and I had this role for over two years. I started volunteering before I got my bike shortly after I sent in my registration I got a call asking if I wanted the position. It is a non-paying position but I have learned so many things that might have been missed if I had not gotten involved. My job is to get sponsors to advertise in our publication called Pedal Talk and the first year I got all the shops in the area involved. I would drop off fliers and get to meet the shop owners and write about the experience of the visit. I began to volunteer for charity cycling events and that has kept me busy all summer and I plan to do it again next year.

Keeping in touch with friends from work is very important especially in the beginning because some people may get jobs before you do. I have friends who work for companies and they give me the heads up when they are hiring. I have not gotten a job yet but if you continue to talk to these same people things may open up that were not available. Sometimes people feel sad or frustrated about losing a job and they need their space especially if you both worked at the same company. Some people may move on faster and it is always important to keep in touch with at least one manager. They always seem to get hired quickly and they can put in a good word for you.
