Adult education: How to stay motivated

Among the many concerns of adult students is the issue of staying motivated amidst constant challenge. Unlike traditional college students, adult learners have a host of various responsibilities with which to contend. From family life to a full-time job, adult students must frequently juggle adult duties and obligations, in addition to conquering schoolwork. Adult learners must also remain motivated throughout this stressful time, otherwise risking chronic stress and burnout.

Though difficult, staying motivated is an absolute necessity for success in anything, especially adult education. Fortunately, as many recent grads can likely attest, there are as many ways to do it as there are paths to a college degree.

Perhaps the easiest way for adult students to stay motivated is to enlist the help of those around them. Sadly, the individualism of our society has somewhat tainted the notion of asking for help. In reality, requesting assistance is often admired and appreciated. Adult learners should realize that working and taking classes is mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausting; just because many people have done it doesn't mean it's easy.

Adult learners would be wise to figure out their potential help-needed areas before enrolling. Will they need childcare on different days and times than usual? Will time off from work become necessary as the semesters progress? Will tutoring and mentoring opportunities become available? Most professors, bosses, and spouses will be more than happy to help when asked, provided the asking is done early and politely. Adult learners will often find how less-stressed they feel when just one responsibility is lightened or lessened, which is why asking for any help at all is so important.

An important by-product of asking for help is the awareness adult learners can spread about their own goals and aspirations. For better or for worse, the opinions of others can be a great motivator. Therefore, the more people that know about one's goals, the better. Even when people would otherwise disappoint themselves, they have a strong tendency not to let others down. Creating some personal cheerleaders is thus indispensable for any adult learner!

Another way for adult learners to stay motivated is to connect with others in similar situations. When lumped-together with young adults with plenty of free time, it can be difficult for adult learners to keep pace in the classroom. Thankfully, other adult students are relatively easy to find,
