Best current television series

What is the best current television series? There are so many good ones out there that it's difficult to pick just one... Actually, no, it's not. Prison Break? Lost? Desperate Housewives? No. It has to be 'Weeds'. It is without a doubt the best show around. The basic outline is completely original.

A young widow needs money to maintain her lifestyle in Californian suburbia and provide for her sons. How does she do it? She sells Marijuana. The possibilities this creates for humor are countless. From the delinquent sons to the equally delinquent brother-in-law, she tries to justify her criminal activity by being a 'nice' and 'conscientious' drug dealer. Her morals and her occupation constantly come into conflict.

Although it is merely a television program it exposes the underbelly of American suburbia. The local Mayor, Doug, is a public servant who is rarely sober and behind closed doors the popularity of drugs show that everything is not quite what it seems. For a television show to address issues such as these is very welcome and the fact that it is incredibly funny makes it the perfect package and an absolutely cracking series to watch.

The humor in 'Weeds' is offbeat at the very least. It is often crass yet it is not toilet humor. The writers have managed to achieve the perfect blend of situation comedy and the spectrum of characters means that the combinations are endless. The unemployed, chef brother-in-law teams up with the lethargic weed-smoking Mayor. The Weed producing drug dealer from a black ghetto falls for the pretty white widow from a wealthy suburb.

The social issues never take over the show and turn it into a dull lecture, it is done in the best way possible: serious issues related to all facets of society are addressed in a subtle way while all the while being entertaining and, if you will pardon the pun, very addictive! Roll on Season three coming this summer!
