F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, "the reason one writes isn't the fact he wants to say something. He writes because he has something to say." Becoming a freelance writer offers one that opportunity. Whether it be sharing meaningful insight into specific events, or simply expressing feelings, good writing will be always be in demand.
A freelance writer provides many special opportunities other fields cannot offer. Working 9 to 5 in a cramped, confining office, performing seemingly endless, petty tasks is no way to spend a day. Granted, it will garner a paycheck, however there are many, more fulfilling, ways to earn money - one being writing. If one possesses a love for writing, why not transform that love into a career?
As a freelance writer, one has the flexibility to set ones own hours. Charles Dickens, author of classics such as A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol, wrote sporadically throughout the day - sometimes for eight hours in a row, sometimes not at all. The point is, freelance writing provides freedom other jobs simply cannot offer. If one has conflicts in the day and cannot write, there is no docking of pay, no potential firing. In contrast, if one is inspired, they have the option of working for hours upon end.
Another benefit of freelance writing stems from love. Many people, especially in todays economy, are forced to work in fields that do not interest them. If one chooses to become a freelance writer, they must in some capacity enjoy writing. I have found that doing things I enjoy never seem tedious, on the contrary, they are fulfilling - the line 'time flies when you are having fun' comes to mind. If one has a passion for writing, the job of writing will not seem like a job at all. The feeling of satisfaction after completing a task, in this case producing a sound, respectable article, should not be a strange feeling. For the freelance writer, satisfaction will become routine, they are always producing something they feel strongly about.
Freelance writers also have the benefit of creativity. A freelance writer has the option to write about anything; if something in specific catches their attention, inspires them, producing writing about the subject is their job. In addition, if a writer has an area of specialty, something they have mastered, cranking out articles regarding that subject will become habit.
The key to freelance writing, in terms of making money, is finding editors willing to publish their work. Obviously, freelance writers must be extremely competent writers, but they must also possess something more. Technically, any Joe can become a freelance writer. What separates those Joe's from a successful writer is professionalism. One must be professional, accepting criticism and handling rejection with class.
Freelance writing can be a dream for some. Their job is writing, something they love. They are their own boss with supreme flexibility. They have the freedom of creativity. So, this begs the question: what are you waiting for?
