Novel excerpts: Post apocalyptic

I spotted Carter walking briskly towards my home. For a split-second, I envied his ability to walk, as he did it so well. He was walking so efficiently and smoothly, he almost seemed to be gliding over the lawn. Just above Carter towards a small-forested area: a skull haphazardly positioned on one of the branches, almost like a sentinel. It was bleached-white, cracked and partially eroded from several years in the deteriorating global environment. Marauders placed it there during the height of the uprisings to scare rivals from entering the area. The human race had certainly degenerated into a primitive, barbaric seemingly tribal groups and warfare. Other groups had used skulls, flesh-clad decapitated heads and full skeletons to scare people from their territory. We had gone from the beginnings of the 'quantum-age' into uncivilized, barbaric times in the blinking of an eye.

The authorities kept promising us that all of the remains were on their way out; we had been doing it ourselves. These remains were next on our list. Although somehow, deep down, part of me wanted them to remain: kind of an eerie and haunting reminder of the nightmare that had befallen our planet. Even though there were still many reminders that we saw and heard of every single day.

Carter and I were driving along at a leisurely clip when I spotted a distant, but very large fire burning in the municipality of Surrey across the Fraser River. Traumatized masses always feared the absolute end of the world was always just a few days away. The fire would certainly not help to soothe the emotionally shattered masses.

"It looks pretty big," Carter said as he pulled over my Jaguar. "There would have been a time when something like this would have scared the shit out of me."

This time I definitely had to agree with him. I reached into my glove compartment to pull out my small, ultra-sophisticated, high-powered spotting scope, magnifying from 10-125 times, which Carter had given me as a birthday gift. It not only magnified, but also enhanced the image, reproducing the image on a high-definition, digital screen. He bought it on a recent trip to Germany. It was part of the new generation of technology, coming out that included treatments for most cancers. The irony of the global crises brought world scientists together to come up with incredibly innovative technologies.

The spotting scope also had a powerful, high-tech transceiver built into it with the ability to receive images and to send email back
