Poetry: Carving pumpkins

by Steve Whitmer

Created on: October 07, 2009

Pumpkins for sale!

Which one, which one,

The smell of hay,

Which one, which one,

Children running, laughing,

Which one, which one,

A cool October night.

Too lumpy, too small,

Which one, which one,

Too brown, too flat,

Which one which one,

Too big, too squat,

Which one, which one,

This one is perfect!

A face to carve,

Which one, which one,

Scary or happy?

Which one, which one,

Teeth jagged or square?

Which one, which one,

This year-happy!

Dad gets a knife,

How fun, how fun!

Carefully cuts a hole,

How fun, how fun!

Dry hands go in,

How fun, how fun!

Slimy hands come out.

Carving, perfecting,

How fun, how Fun!

Picking seeds out of slime,

How fun, how fun,

Laughing and teasing,

How fun, how fun!

A special memory is made.

The pumpkin rots,

Gets thrown away,

The memory lasts.
