I think the Wii is already proving a success, and will go on to prove a bigger one. The most obvious way that something can be successful is to make a lot of money, but there are other successes too. The biggest reason I think the Wii will succeed is that it is opening gaming up to a bigger audience, people gaming has traditionally failed to reach.
Parents, grandparents, partners and sceptics... A quick go on the Wii seems to have more power to change peoples minds about gaming than any rational argument or prior console ever did. And once those minds are changed, the Virtual Console can give instant access to retro classics in the space of a few minutes for only a few pounds.
If you ever get bored of games it'll give you the news, weather and internet access too, for the lowest launch price of any console I can remember.
Success can come in the opening of an eye.
