How does the drug Nexium work?
Nexium is a drug that doctors prescribe for the reduction of acid in the stomach. It can be prescribed in combination with other drugs for ulcers at the same time. Overall, it helps hyperacidity of the stomach, gastric ulcers, healing of reflux esophagitis, and another ulcerative condition of the stomach known as Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. Nexium also aids in the healing of H.pylori infection of the stomach.
Nexium is a type of drug that is a proton pump inhibitor. So as a result, it turns off the acid producing pumps in your stomach and makes a person feel more comfortable eliminating acid back-ups that occur. Erosions to the esophagus are also healed up by taking Nexium during therapy. The drug was also made to relieve the heartbirn associated with GERD.
Before your doctor prescribes Nexium for your acid and stomach issues, he must have your complete medical history noted. If you have any type of liver diseases, or heart disease, make sure this is noted by your doctor treating you. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, do tell your doctor beforehand. This medication has not been reported as being harmful to the unborn baby, but it may pass into the breast milk as a possibility.
Nexium needs to be taken just as directed by your physician. Do not take more or less than they prescribe. The therapy you have on Nexium is usually for the short term up to eight weeks and not indefinite in many cases. You need to take this medicine on your empty stomach either just before bedtime one hour after a snack, or one hour before any meal. Always take this pill with a glass of water at least 8 or 12 ounces. It can also be used in people that have an NG tube via a syringe.
If you miss a Nexium dosage, do not double your next dosage. Instead take the next dose you have scheduled.
Like any drug, Nexium does have possible side effects that can occur. The most serious effect is an allergic reaction which is rare but can happen in some people. If you have signs of swelling in the tongue, hives, and trouble in your breathing, do not waste time and contact immediate medical help.
Other less serious side effects from taking Nexium can be dry mouth, headache, diarrhea, constipation, and gas pain.
Also be aware of ALL drugs you are on which could have very serious interactions with Nexium. These drugs include Valium, HIV/AIDS drugs, Nizoral, iron, or blood thinning medications like Coumadin. For your doctor to safely prescribe this medicine, you may need adjustments or not be able to take this drug at all.
