Qualities of a successful manager

A manager needs a lot of qualities if he is to succeed. These include

* The ability to see potential, initiative and skill in a potential worker when interviewing new staff or training or promoting existing staff - encouraging it and utilising it in the best way possible for the good of the business. Successful managers are able to pick the best of the bunch when interviewing and know who to let go and move to another department.

If a member of staff is unreliable, slack and lazy , incompetent or difficult he must be able to recognise when the situation can be successfully sorted and can be rectified or sack them. If they are not working at their best because they are a square peg in a round hole, more suited to a different job or department, he must be able to see this and move them as necessary. Good staff would be given further training, encouragement or maybe even a pay rise in order to help them blossom and stay faithful to the business. Successful managers are able to work out who to keep on, who to let go and who to move.

* The ability to delegate and see potential in those he has not delegated to before. The more he delegates the more menial chores and duties the more time he has free to concentrate on the more responsible and difficult things. He will know who he can trust with extra responsibilities.

* The ability to get on with people, being tactful and diplomatic when necessary, likeable, yet honest, sharp and forthright when needed. Nobody will take orders from someone they do not respect and like. Never losing his temper when talking to staff or customers, even if they deserve it. All successful managers come across as likeable, fair and in control.

* The ability to make decisions, sometimes very quickly, without a lot of dithering, procrastination or uncertainty. The confidence to stand by decisions and make changes when needed. The willingness to shoulder responsibility. The ability to be brave when making decisions, not playing safe or doing as someone else wishes all the time. Successful managers are quick and capable at making good decisions.

* Good time keeping. Putting business first when necessary, and not taking time off for holidays, wife and sickness often or regularly. Successful managers put work first when needed.

* Ambition is essential as without it he will not have the drive to improve and succeed. An ambitious manager will have a vision which he works towards rather than just doing what needs to be done. If he has been working
