The first in an incredibly successful series of games spanning many systems. The Legend of Zelda remains as one of Nintendo's largest franchises.
Story
You are Link, a young boy with a mysterious connection to the Triforces of Wisdom and Power that keep order in Hyrule. Ganon, the Prince of Darkness, and his evil army have stolen the Triforce of Power, and seek to gain the Triforce of Wisdom in order to rule Hyrule completely. Before Ganon could reach the Triforce of Wisdom, Princess Zelda broke it into eight pieces and hid them throughout Hyrule. Ganon has kidnapped Zelda in hopes of attaining the missing Triforce, but luckily her handmaid Impa reached Link in time to warn of Ganon's plan. Your quest is to find the pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom and force Ganon into a final battle for the survival of Zelda and the denizens of Hyrule.
Gameplay
The Legend of Zelda is an overhead action adventure game. There is a wide world map to explore, and hidden throughout the land are eight dungeons that house segments of the Triforce. There are also many inhabitants of Hyrule who help and hinder Link, including shopkeepers, a gambling room, people who give Link hints, people who give Link items, and secret rooms where you can gain or lose rupees. Much of the game's story is told through these characters, but many of the dungeons are hidden in secret areas that can be difficult to discover.
The game is also somewhat non-linear. You're free to wander around the map, but limited by the items you buy or find in dungeons. Many dungeons are impossible to explore or reach unless you found one secret item that is hidden in every previous dungeon. These include a raft, a ladder, a bow, a whistle, and many other items. There are also other important items that can be found at shops, like an arrow, a candle, medicine, and the blue ring to name a few.
Items in the game can be accessed via a subscreen menu, although only one can be equipped at a time, while your sword is always equipped. Your sword can be advanced to three levels, and it's imperative to find the third level Master Sword in order to defeat Ganon. Some items can also be advanced, such as the candle, the arrow, and the magic wand with the addition of the book.
There are many kinds of enemies in the game, the most common of which are Gels, Keese, Molblins, Octoroks, and Tektites. Enemies appear in certain areas around Hyrule, such as Ghosts in the graveyard, Lynels in the mountains, Peahats in the desert, or Stalfos
