That's a sliver of lucidity," he said with a thin smile.
Several minutes later, he arrived at the general's office. The meeting between Jenkins and his intelligence people were breaking up as he was heading to the doorway. William spun his finger to within an inch of his temple. The general responded with a quick nod and then said, "Get back to your bunker; we start full-scale war within the half hour."
He nodded and left.
General Jenkins looked nervously at his intelligence officers. Their current estimates of enemy troop strength and the success of the first air strike was now woefully in doubt. The enemy now outnumbered his forces by additional 60,000 troops with an additional five thousand troops pouring in every 12 minutes. Considering the infiltrators, he knew that both events could quickly lead to a collapse of the allied forces. The air strike; although largely initially successful, was now being offshoot by the arrival of these troops; the general's forces now unable to successfully interdict the arrival of these troops.
"I want every operational piece and missile launcher to fire for 20 minutes right at the heart of where these fresh troops are coming in!" he cried into his communications device.
In the interim, William arrived at the teleportation pad, looking nervously at his watch. The operator saluted him as he walked onto it. Suddenly there was the crackle of small-arms fire in the nearby corridor. As several dozen dimensional copies were waging a fierce battle with fifty or so loyal troops for control of the strategic corridor, which was at the heart of the base.
The operator hastily the teleportation signal, just as several dozen of the enemies burst into the control room and machine-gunned him to death. William was reaching for his pistol as his signal rayed a dozen miles to his base.
He arrived back at his bunker several minutes later. Jonathon was standing there waiting for him, Selena finalizing details on their part of the war. "The enemy is at General Jenkins' HQ!" he shouted. "We must get the paratroopers in there!"
"We can't! We are under orders; we are responsible for this entire sector! His orders are quite implicit: if his base comes under direct attack, his adjutant, who is in a separate base, will immediately commence the attack. I think we are getting the orders to move. It's not the adjutant, it's General Jenkins!" Jonathon shouted.
William thought about the general as he ran with Jonathon to the battlefield control center.
