Not-So-Common Dog Names
Choosing a suitable and unique name for your newly acquired dog may not be as easy as you think. That is, unless you are planning to give them an average or mundane title. One way to discover a truly great name is to take several minutes (if not longer) and think out loud with pen and paper in hand. The easiest way to create a list of unique names for your canine companion is by using the alphabet. Start your list with A and as a name of interest comes to mind, write it down. As your list becomes longer and you get to know your dog's personality better, one of these distinctive names will just seem to fit.
The letter A is fairly simple. With names like Abby, Alvin, Angle, Animal, Arabella, Arden, Aria, Asia, Asterisk, Ava, and Axle, your four-legged friend will definitely have an uncommon yet suitable name. Some exceptional B names that might fit your new pet are Baltic, Barley, Bauer, Bella, Berry, Biscuit, Bistro, Bonanza, Bowtie, Bundy, and Button. Bonanza may match a ranch dog while Button could be for that 'cute as a button' Chihuahua-mix that stole your heart from the first day you met her.
The letter C opens up many new options which may make your choice a lot harder than you first thought. Considerations include Casper, Charcoal, Checker, Cheerio, Chester, Cinnamon, Cola, Colby, Combo, Comet, Cooper, Coupon, Cricket, or Cuba. Is your dog all or mostly white? Casper might just suit him or her perfectly but if your new dog is energetic and likes to race from room to room, Comet might be more appropriate.
D will yield many fun and clever considerations to be added to your expanding list. Daisy, Daphne, Davis, Dawson, Demon, Digit, Dimple, Dino, Disney, Dollar, Domino, Donut/Doughnut, Doodle, Dooley, Dufus, and Duncan are just some of the more popular yet prominent names that can match almost any breed of dog. However, Domino may be more fitting to a breed like the Dalmatian.
E names are a little more difficult to come up with, but still productive with names such as Eager, Eeyore, Elvis, Emma, Emmett, Engine, Erie, and Euro. Eager is fitting for Jack Russell Terrier types. Keep in mind that there are multiple ways of spelling some names, so you will end up with a lot more possibilities than originally expected.
The letter F may require a bit more thought, but a few options are Famous, Feldspar, Figment, Fisher, Foster, Freckle, Frolic, and Fusion. Freckle is a unique name for a dog with spots, either on their fur, or on the underlying skin (that may be visible). The G category includes names like Gadget, Genny (J), Ginger, Gooch, Gretchen, Gretel, Griffin, Gumby, and Gyro. If your dog seems unusually flexible and/or perhaps even acrobatic, Gumby will suit him/her.
For the letter H easy additions to your list might include Halo, Heidi, Heinz, Helix, Helmut, Hendrix, Henley, Hershey, Hindu, Homer, and Huntley. Your angel-of-a-pet may best be suited by being called Halo. Names beginning with I require a creative mind for clever titles like Icon, Igloo, India, Indigo, Ipod, and Izzy. If your new companion comes from a blue line, perhaps Indigo is appropriate. Maybe your dog represents something specific/special to you, calling him or her Icon, demonstrates the importance.
J names such as Jasper, Jaxson, Jenkins, Jersey, Jiggle, Josey, Jumper, and Juneau are uncommon but very suitable names for fitting dogs. Some dogs don't mind wearing clothes, they may even enjoy it, here the name Jersey could fit quite well. K is for Kagle, Keebler, Kermit, Kidder, Kodak, Kringle, Krypton, Kudos, or Kudzu; all are original name choices. Perhaps your dog is a camera-hog, why not name them Kodak?
The letter L adds Lauder, Leo, Leroy, Lily, Linus, Loden, Lozenge, Lucy, and Lupo to the ever-growing list. Go ahead and get out another sheet of paper, this is only about half way point through the alphabet. M names come to mind much easier with suggestions as Madame, Master, Merlot, Metro, Mindy, Mini (Minit), Mister, Monet, Monroe, Monster, Montana, Muppet or Muttles which may fit your canine friend. Mischief is a great name for a pooch always getting into trouble! Letter N takes a little more brain power with examples like Nano, Nelson, Newton, Nickel, Nilla, Ninja, Nixon, Nugget, and Nutmeg as choices. How about Nugget for that adorable Pomeranian?
O includes the popular media title of Odie, but also gives Olive, Orbit, Oscar, Oslo, Otis, and Otto as additional options. Names can be chosen according to special markings or coat color, if preferred. The letter P will add multiple items to your list since it is a fun letter to work with. Names like Paget, Peanut, Pepper, Pickles, Pirate, Pluto, Polo, Poncho, Popeye, Portia, and Puzzle are an array of choices so you can give your dog the most suitable name. Behavior and habits are also indicators of possible good names to use.
Q is somewhat of a brainteaser category, but potential names can be found with Quaker, Queen, Quiggle, Quincey, and Quinn as possibilities. Create your own original name by combining two separate words into one.
The letters R,S, and T are somewhat a breeze to work with producing almost endless possibilities. R names include Rainey, Raisin, Reese, Riley, Roscoe, and Ruler. How about Raisin for a Chinese Shar Pei, or otherwise wrinkly dog? S can be Saffron, Sailor, Shiloh, Signal, Sinclair, Sourdough, Sprite, Sprocket, Stella, Sunkist, or Sydney.
Names for your dog that begin with T might include Taffy, Teddy, Tic Tac, Tivo, Trixie, Turtle, Tuscan, Twix, and Tyson. If your new friend is of a small or mini breed, Tic Tac could be your number one choice. Maybe you have a cuddler-of-a-dog, a fitting name is to call him Teddy.
U names are unusual, but the selection includes Ubu, Uncle, Unit, Uno, and Utah. Do you remember the black lab Ubu that was part of an ad for a production company? The letter V might stand for Vander, Vanna, Velcro, Venus, Vintage, Virgo, Vixen, or Volume, should your dog be the bearer of a V name. Velcro fits for a pet that is always by your side, a true companion.
W represents a wide variety of name choices for your new pet. Would Wally, Wendel, Whisper, Wiley, Willow, Wilson, Wizard, or Woodstock be a good fit for your dog? Coming up with letter X names challenges anyone, but a few suggestions include Xanax, Xenon, and Xerox. A black and white dog of any breed could be called Xerox.
Names beginning with Y that you may consider as your furry friend's new title are Yankee, Yeller, Yippy, Yoda, Yoshi, or Yugo. If you have a rescued dog that came from the northeast, how about calling it Yankee? Or maybe you'd rather stick with an old favorite like Yeller. At first thought, the letter Z appears difficult to find names for, but actually yields several possibilities including Zanie, Zelda, Zero, Zeus, Ziggy, Zinnia, Zipper, Zoe/Zoey, Zucker, and Zulu.
You should now have a lengthy list of all sorts of name possibilities; at the very least you should have had fun brainstorming ideas. It is totally up to you, the pet parent, to choose a meaningful and suitable title for your new best friend. Before finalizing your decision, you may want to do a little research to find out some background information on the potential name you have chosen. This will enable your decision efforts a more pertinent and suitable name for your companion.
