What is disc golf

Disc Golf, it is as it sounds.

When someone first hears golf, the first thing that comes to mind is middle aged rich men with their plaid obnoxious golf pants on complete with a polo shirt and funny hats driving around all day on a golf cart. Oh and let's not forget the swinging a club at a small ball maybe an inch or so in diameter. Disc golf however brings a whole new aspect to the world of golf overall.

To begin with, disc golf is not played with golf clubs and golf balls. It is played with specially designed Frisbees that are aerodynamically designed to fly farther, longer, and straighter then your normal house hold Frisbee. Additionally, the discs are made of special type of plastic that varies from disc to disc. These suckers can leave nasty welts with even the slightest throw. This is because technically you really should not be playing catch with disc golf discs. You see these discs are also a lot heavier then your ordinary household Frisbee.

Now after you've have compiled a set of discs, which should include a putter, a heavy disc that is close to a normal Frisbee not meant to cut through the air and is meant for close shots, a mid range approach, meant for further out shots that what would be too short for a driver and is slightly heavier then a driver but more dynamic then a putter, and the driver, usually the most aerodynamic of all your discs and is meant to fly long distances in a throw, you can head out to your local disc golf course and begin throwing.

Mind you, disc golf is simple in its logistics, but very difficult in the way it executed. To put it a different way, the basic objective of the game is to take your Frisbee and throw it in the correct basket with in a certain number of throws. Seems simple right? NOT! Disc golf is a sport where a heavy amount of practice and technique is needed. Let's face it, you're not going to chuck a Frisbee six hundred plus yards in a throw, not without years of practice. Within that practice time however, lies the beauty of disc golf. You can throw however you like. You have to experiment until the day you find that magic position that renders your disc the ability to soar like a bird.

With proper technique and follow through, coupled with a good disc and strength, chucking a disc 600+ yards is not that ludicrous of a thought. On top of it all, you get the chance to breath and exercise by walking around in the park you play in. No golf carts for us and none are needed. Now get out there and play.
