Our western name for God is simply inadequate to understand anything about Him. In order to understand Trinity of God, we must look at the name He calls Himself. The Concordant Version of the Old Testament teaches us the ancient Hebrew, the name for God, or the name that God made for himself, was "Ieue Alueim," (pronounced Yaw-a-ey All-u-eim.) Later, Alueim was also spelled "Elohim." In this name alone, we can learn much about who God is.
The first part, Ieue, (or the more modern version is something like "Yaweh") speaks to the character of God. These sequence of vowels are linked to the Hebrew words indicating Will, Being, Was. It simply speaks about God's eternal nature.
The second part of His name, Alueim is what speaks to His trinitarian nature. Here are the meanings of each syllable: Al = the Subjector (God the Father), Ue = to the subjector (Jesus), im = more than two, or plural (the existance of the Holy Spirit.).
I think most biblical scholars agree that God has always existed in His Trinitarian form. The scriptures do not give any evidence that God went through any changes, adding to, or taking away from it and, in fact, James of the New Testament states, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever." The Book of John also tells us about Jesus, "Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." This passage proves that Jesus was incarnate God, who was there at the time of Creation.
Each of these three persons of God are extremely different in function, yet they rely on one another. God the Father gave physical birth to Jesus with the help of the Holy Spirit. Jesus brought God's power back to the human race as originally intended. Again, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can all know the Father and cooperate with what He wants each of us to do in the earth. The thing that has always been the abiding thread that holds this whole symbiotic relationship together is love. This is God's greatest example of how we should be with one another. He never argues with Himself. Each person of the Godhead recognizes and moves freely and happily in their roles. With the support of the other parts, comes great strength as well. Think of how much we can accomplish in this world if we simply live in the strength that harmony and love provides. This gives new meaning to another scripture, "God IS love." Since we are created in His image, he wants us to BE love, too.
