Fatherhood tips: Things every new dad needs to know

Parenthood is perplexing for both mother and father. The fathers seems to have a little more challenging of a time than the mothers. Maybe it is because they didn't grow up practicing how to put a bib on a baby doll, or singing them to sleep. Whatever the reason may be, men need to know a few basics when entering into the realm of fatherhood.

1) It is scary for everyone the first time. The first time you hold your baby, it may seem a little nerve-wracking. The first feeding may be a little bumpy. The first few months of sleepless nights are rough for everyone. Don't feel like something is wrong with you when you experience these emotions, they will fade in time.

2) You won't break the baby just by holding him or her. I know your tiny bundle of joy seems like he or she will break into a million pieces if you don't hold them just right. That's not true. Babies love to be held by their daddies. Find a groove that works well for you, and your child will learn to love it too. In fact, they may even love it so much that they request it. The only way to get over the initial fear of breaking the baby is to push through and hold the baby as much as you can. The more you hold him or her, the more it will become like second nature.

3) Mommies have a special way of doing things that you can't. Don't feel bad if mommy is able to come over and sooth baby right to sleep after you have been trying for an hour. Mommies are just born with a nature that gives to the gentle, soothing side. Don't feel ripped off, but instead embrace the gift that mommies have and take the needed break.

4) Babies cry, eat, and sleep. If you are imagining a day filled with giggles and grins while your child holds on to your big finger, you are delusional. For the first few months babies eat, sleep, cry, and soil their diapers. There is little reward in the beginning months, but do not be dismayed. The first time the words Da da come out of your little one's mouth it will all be worth it!

Parenthood is difficult for both parties involved, and one of the major things every dad should know is that mommy needs your help. Taking care of an infant is very stressful and exhausting. She will need you to pitch in as much as you can. This not only will help you bond with baby, but it will also keep your marriage strong and vibrant. Any woman will greatly appreciate an active father.
