Legendary film star Judy Garland, who projected the essence of America in timeless classics such as “The Wizard of Oz” and "Meet Me in St. Louis," always counseled, 'be a first-rate version of yourself, not a second rate imitation of somebody else.'
True style comes from within - and is uniquely yours. This is the secret of women who have embodied great personal style - notably former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn, best remembered for her starring role in films such as "My Fair Lady" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's."
The key to finding your individual style is simple. Find out what looks good on you and what expresses your own sense of style, not what looks good looks good on someone else. For Audrey, given her lovely 20-inch waist, she would wear clothing that cinched her waist, thus accentuating it. However, if your waist is not so alluring, but you do have attractive legs, wear clothing that accentuates the latter.
And, always complement whatever you wear with the right base - fit body, clean skin, well-manicured nails, nicely coiffed hair, good posture and a radiating personality that projects your essential style and the beauty within you.
Taking a page from Audrey and Jackie, certain must-haves are the little black dress - a fashion staple if ever there was one, given its slimming effect. But, of course, the particular style of the little black dress you choose must suit you personally. So choose carefully. Likewise, wear shoes with just the right heel. Other must-haves are a scarf that accents your personal style; dark sunglasses; and small pearl earrings, complemented by a matching necklace.
Casual clothing is another important staple. Audrey, like Jackie, loved jeans, slacks, khakis, and skirts paired with polos, turtlenecks, button down shirts, or t-shirts in solid color, especially white - and no logos. Audrey's pants style was either narrow, or fitted to boots, and made of dark classic denim. But, again, choose what suits you.
For shoes Audrey’s favorite was high-end Ferragamo. She would never skimp on quality, reasoning, it’s far better to have the real thing - even it meant fewer shoes - respecting the hard work the designer put into it making a quality, comfortable shoe.
Albeit, for items on which comfort does not hinge, consider spending less, and pairing them with more expensive items, providing an overall look of sophisticated elegance.
Finally, always try and look stylish wherever you are going - whether it's a quick trip to the supermarket or an evening at the symphony. And, whatever you wear, it should be tailored to your shape - and the occasion. No jeans on the red carpet and no fancy dresses at casual events with friends.
As for one's personal decorating style, if you follow the basic rules concerning personal fashion style, you will find just the right look for your home that's suited to and enhances its own special attributes.
