A hot dog really is one of those foods that everyone seems to like to indulge in at least once in a while. They're easy to make, they're easy to eat, and the mere act of enjoying them tends to bring back many fond memories for all of us in regards to our childhoods. However, even our favorite foods can get old or boring after a while - especially if we turn to them often for quick meals or easy solutions.
Luckily for us, hot dogs are not only convenient and delicious, but they are definitely the type of food that lends itself well to creative ideas and experimentation as well. While a hot dog is always going to go well with traditional toppings like mustard, ketchup, chili or pickle relish, the following are some fun ideas to consider the next time you're in the mood for a little something different.
1. Simple Salad or Slaw
This idea is the perfect light option to turn to when it's hot out or when you're looking for a more figure-friendly option. Whip up your favorite cole slaw recipe or dress some crisp and nutritious mixed baby greens with light Italian salad dressing and enjoy on top of a hot dog that's been grilled over an open flame for a taste of summer anytime.
2. Sauerkraut and Brown Mustard
Those who enjoy their hot dog with a little bit of a tangy bite will absolutely love this option. Choose an extra-grainy mustard for added texture. Add a few chopped onions for even more zing or sprinkle with finely chopped deli pastrami to create a delicious Reuben dog. This option is also delicious over bratwurst or Polish sausage.
3. Mexican Style Condiments
If you're a nacho fan, then you might want to try topping your hot dog with spicy nacho cheese, a drizzle of enchilada sauce, jalapeno rings, and pinto beans for a south of the border treat. Add crispy tortilla strips for a pleasing crunch and an authentic nacho "feel". This hot dog is also wonderful wrapped in a warm tortilla if you feel you need a break from the bun.
4. Asian Style Flavors
Turn your hot dogs into delicious and different Eastern treats by glazing them with your favorite teriyaki sauce before adding them to their buns. Top with crispy chopped cabbage that's been dressed with a light sesame dressing or top with fried wantons. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes if you like things hot. This option is especially delicious when you choose a sweeter bread for your hot dog rolls.
5. Mushrooms and Swiss
Here is a classic combination that honestly does go wonderfully with just about everything and a hot dog is no exception. Chop and sautee a few portobello mushrooms in some butter or olive oil and salt. Spoon over your hot dog and top liberally with shredded Swiss. A couple of thin slices of Brie or some shaved or crumbled Gruyere is also a delicious choice when it comes to your cheese.
6. Apples and Onions
Apples and onions represent two great tastes that taste great together and they go just as well on top of a hot dog as they do with pork chops. Peel and chop a Granny smith apple and a medium-sized white onion. Sautee in butter until the sugars have caramelized. Add to your hot dog and enjoy. For a little added flavor, add a sprinkle of cheddar cheese as well.
Hot dogs are so much more than just a childhood favorite or a summertime staple. They can also be wonderful blank canvases just waiting to be decorated with a symphony of flavors. Experiment with some of your favorites and see what masterpieces you can make out of your hot dogs as well!
