The worst hairstyles for women

Hairstyle trends come and go, but there are some styles that  never truly get a fashionable tick of approval. This article looks at some of the worst hairstyles in recent history. If you want to avoid becoming a hairstyle victim, consider avoiding these six worst hairstyles:

1. The mullet

The mullet hairstyle is typically short at the front and sides, with a long rat's tail at the back. Even on men this style is frequently joked about, but when Kirsten Stewart recently sported a version of the mullet, it brought about many negative comments. Luckily, it was only for a movie role and she quickly donned a few hair extensions to return to the feminine, flowing style that fans know her by.

2. Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks as a fashion style are formed by twisting several strands of hair until it is fused into a single lock. Unless they are worn for some form of cultural significance they tend to be viewed as unruly and although the perception is often unfounded many people believe they are dirty.

3. Teased beehive buns

Hair that's too high and over teased tends to bring about bad flashbacks from the 1980's. Prior to this it is also a reminder of the time when women wore their hair in huge, elaborate buns and didn't wash their hair for lengthy periods of time. During the 18th century they often had to sleep on a special neck piece to keep their elaborate styles intact. Many stories tell of creepy crawlies setting up residence in the huge birds nest style do's.

4. Super long hair in poor condition

Long locks can be very feminine and versatile, but without lots of extra TLC they tend to look scraggy. When the hair begins to get wispy it should be cut off to create a healthy overall appearance. If you intend to grow your hair below chest level make sure you treat it right and don't get it layered too thin on the ends. Very fine hair is simply not suited to this kind of style.

5. Man style short hair

Women like Halle Berry, have shown us that short hair can be very sexy when cut in a flattering style, but without the right element of style it can convey a butch appearance. So before going short make sure that it will suit your face shape and bone structure and choose a style with a sexy edge. Men might be able to get away with a basic bowl cut, but women tend to be condemned.

6. Styles that utilize large scrunchies or clips

During the 1980's to early 1990's girls and women wore hair elastics that had a thick strip of fabric gathered around them. These scrunchies were popular in neon colors and prints. In addition, hair clips were often so big they covered the whole up style. Since this time practical hair implements have become something to disguise. You can now buy clear or color matching skinny hair elastics and clips that get hidden under the hairstyle. There is currently a bit of an 80's revival going on, but this is likely to only be a fad, so if you don't want to look dated steer clear of scrunchies and big clips.
