TV show reviews: The Bachelorette

Spinning off of ABC's The Bachelor, a dating game show where a man selects his future bride from a pool of about 25 contestants, producers offered the first season runner-up her own series entitled The Bachelorette. Throughout the course of this reality dating game show, Trista Rhen, went on several group and individual dates with potential suitors. The weekly episodes culminated in a "rose ceremony" similar to the one on The Bachelor in which Rhen weeded out undesirable candidates in order to select a future husband.

Rhen eventually found love with Ryan Sutter, a 27-year-old firefighter and poet from Vail, Colorado, who proposed six weeks after their first encounter. The couple was married on air in December of 2003 in one of the most widely viewed television specials in history and continues to live happily together.
Season Two's Bachelorette, Meredith Phillips, had been rejected by the Season Four Bachelor, Bob Guiney. At the end of her season's run, Phillips selected Ian McKee, however, their "real-life" relationship was clearly not what they had anticipated after their reality show experience, and the two went their separate ways in February of 2005.
In a twist during Season Three, the contestant was Jennifer Schefft, who had been previously been selected by Season Three's Bachelor, Andrew Firestone, the heir to the Firestone Tire fortune. After their subsequent break up, Schefft was selected to be the third Bachelorette, but stunned audiences when she chose none of her Bachelor-candidates in a final, live rose-ceremony.
