Landing a job in retail management can sometimes seem like a daunting task. Oftentimes there are many other associates who want the position as it becomes available and the competition seems insurmountable. However, with these tips and tricks of the trade you will be in the best possible position when the opportunity arises.
Be the best employee you can.
By this you should always be on time. Complete every task assigned to you quickly and efficiently. Make sure you communicate with both your managers and coworkers. Once you do complete your tasks, go ask for more. Let the managers or leaders of your workplace see for themselves how hard you are working. They will take notice when you're the only employee coming back with a completed list and asking for more duties.
Dress for success.
Don't be the associate that shows up to work in shorts and a ratty t-shirt, especially if you desire a position in management. Dress for the job that you want. Yes you may get a few nice shirts dirty every now and then but you will be viewed in a better light then the alternative.
Let them know your desire.
If you wish to advance, let them know it. Schedule a meeting with your supervisor and explain what you wish to accomplish. Ask him or her for some constructive criticism about your current work habits and ask for areas in which you can improve. Ask them what qualities they like their managers to possess. They will be happy to give you feedback, especially if you take it to heart.
Work on your opportunities.
If given areas for improvement, work on them. Let the managers know your progress and check in with them often. This hard charging behavior will get you noticed and separate you from your peers.
Advance your knowledge and understanding.
If you are not sure on a specific area or function of your job or other associates take the time and learn it. Be a team player and help in other areas when needed. Be the go-to-employee in times of need.
Training.
Be up to date and ahead of schedule on training that is available to you. Chances are management has to be trained on specific management duties as well as being familiar with all of the duties of the workforce. If you too are able to do all of the workforce duties and Sally in accounting can't, then you have a leg up on Sally when it comes to qualifications.
Manage your time.
Ensure that you are spending the appropriate time on assigned tasks or other duties. It should not take 2 hours to make a schedule for 5 people, just like it shouldn't take 5 minutes to make a schedule for 100 people. Make sure you use your time effectively for maximum work output.
Interview with confidence.
Chances are there is an interview process. Make sure that you are making good eye contact and your body language displays confidence. Think about your answer a moment or so before you give it. Have the complete answer in your head before you begin. This will help reduce the very unprofessional and confidence sucking ums and uh's in your final answer.
As you can see with a few simple tricks and tips you can be well ahead of the pack when that management job becomes available. By ensuring that you are a quality employee, letting the managers know your desires and see your work effort first hand, you are sure to be on the top of their list.
