The American Pit Bull Terrier's most famous bloodlines are said to come from the famous John P. Colby who owned his first Pit Bull at the young age of thirteen, that was in 1888. His son Louis B. Colby followed in his footsteps and has kept the legacy of John P. Colby alive, the Colby Pit Bull bloodlines also known as "Colby dogs" are just as popular today as they were a century ago. The Colby stock is considered the purest pit bull bloodlines worldwide.
Colby Pit Bull lineage can be traced back to England and Ireland. John P. Colby is responsible for making the lineage of Colby pit bulls available to the common person; at one time these fine dogs and their secret lineage was only shared with family members or very close and trustworthy friends.
Interestingly, Mr. Colby not only bred the finest dogs, but he helped establish the Staffordshire Club of America, to preserve the pit bull breed. John P. Colby was a Charter member, and in 1936 he influenced the pitbull breed's acceptance into the American Kennel Club (A.K.C.) under the name of Staffordshire. Colby's "Primo" was chosen as the game dog that represented the standard for the breed. Read more about American Pit Bull Terriers, The Colby Strain since 1889 by Louis B. Colby.
Other well known American Pit Bull Breeders include Floyd Boudreaux, Maurice Carver, and Don Mayfield. Dave Wilson and Carlos Barksdale are known for the Blue Bloodlines "Razors Edge", enthusiastic about the pit bull breed they pulled together enough cash to purchase good bloodline game dogs with papers, it is said that they bought a grandson of "Plumbers Alligator" which was a descendant of mainly Mayfield bloodlines. American Dog Breeders Association (ADBA) registered the first Razors Edge dog which was bred from the Mayfield bloodline; the sire "Zues" and bitch "Jinx".
Other famous Pit Bull Terrier bloodlines are the "Old Family Red Nose" known for agility and determination, "Colby Dogs" are considered to have velocity and to be very swift, "Caver" have a reputation of being powerful, and many more.
The breed and bloodlines of the American Pit Bull Terrier are fascinating, although the breed was once known for Bull Baiting which was banned long ago, and most recently has received a lot of negative publicity because of irresponsible dog breeders and owners alike, the true bloodlines of Pit Bulls represent a quality breed that has a rich history.
American Pit Bull Terriers have represented the U.S. Forces, been used in advertisement such as Buster Brown shoes, and of course we all know and love the famous "Petey" of the Little Rascals and Our Gang. The Colby bloodlines are by far the most interesting, a great read authored by, Louis B. Colby and Diane Jessup is their book "Colby's Book of the American Pit Bull Terrier".
