Leadership plays a part in every aspect of our social environment. Consequently, it can be the rise or fall of any group. Leaders who want to be successful must first be aware of what it is they must do to be effective. The greatest leaders are revered for their poise and command. What's more, they know how to play the right roles in different situations. Their ability to adjust kept their people moving forward to a common goal or, for morale's sake, a state of well being.
It is essential for success to be able to influence people's behavior and attitudes. One way to help grab the reigns of influence is by listening to people's interests, for it is easier to follow someone who shares the same beliefs. Also, people who are more talkative and more collective in a crisis tend to be placed in leaderships roles. These, consequently, are people who exude confidence.
Leaders are depicted by their non-verbal, as well as verbal, cues. They avoid slouching and shifty eye movement that translates to timid body language. When they speak, not only do they keep their eyes focused, they stand with their shoulders relatively square with the listener barring there is nothing else to be focused on during the conversation. This shows intent and people tend to be more attentive to those in front of them rather than those to the side. Although most people are not body language experts, their subconscious or gut feeling will pick up on timidity. Suppose for a moment that a person in charge is unkempt and slumps his shoulders while giving firm orders. The group may react negatively to this and, worst, lose confidence in what they are doing.
Finally, it is best to know when to be what kind of leader and why. Be aware if the group is feeling pensive or irritated. A good leader is not just a demanding one, but also one that can offer sympathy. This is called an expressive leader. Opposite of that is an instrumental leader whose goal it is to keep the group moving forward. But learn the right time to use expressive or instrumental because these two can conflict with each other. Similarly, choose the best style. The authoritarian style works best when the team seeks absolute guidance, such as in a dire situation. Permissive, on the other hand, works best when the team is set on a more mundane task. For an authoritarian type to impose in such a situation could cause unwanted resentment. A democratic leader is a medium between authoritarian and permissive. Usually this is the kind of leader that benefits most because people are more productive when they have a choice.
Leadership roles must be filled for a group or society to thrive. The most effective leaders know what it is that they want out of their group and how to get it. In fact, all leaders have a lot of the same qualities when compared. They are those who are outspoken, strong people who often represent their group's beliefs. The types they play are crafted to gain the best result from their followers. The execution of leadership is most important to its groups' purpose.
