Soul mates?

For my 25 years of existence I should have piled up some cynicism. I have reached the bottom so many times that it would be hard for someone to believe the pure and romantic side of me still exists.

I believe in soul mates.

Yes, that is nave. No need to point it out. Every tiny bit of my rational mind comprehends the fact that the existence of one and only one individual that can act as the better half of my humble being is ridiculous and totally unbelievable.

Let me state that again: I believe in soul mates.

We rarely believe in miracles. Probably until these shape up our lives, shake us so profoundly that we are never able to return to our old selves again. But the tiny everyday miracles are rejected as something that rational minds cannot simply accept.

Same thing goes for soul mates. You know soul mates exist once you find your own. Here I go again, another childish statement. By now I have probably earned the reputation of the most gullible female creature to ever walk on this planet.

It all changes when you feel comfortable sitting down with someone and listening to each other's silence. When that silence starts talking, when communication takes place no words said. You know that the magic is happening.

Passion goes away. Love turns into respect and friendship. When you find your soul mate it is forever.

Sometimes the search is too long and we get so frustrated and lonely that the only self-preservation option is to stop believing in the beauty of it all.

Think of the whole issue another way.

When we stop that search we turn into simple mammals selecting the right mate based on genetic advantages and the ability to generate the best offspring. Is true romance that rational? Or we leave it all there, once we add the needed tiny spec of irrationality that creates explosions and marks the human being forever?

Yes, you might settle for a compromise. You might stop the search. Or so obsessed with the goal of finding the perfect soul mate you might miss the actual thing. Soul mate hunting is actually a tricky matter. Or is it? Maybe things just happen when they are supposed to happen. Maybe fate is real. Maybe wishes really come true when we believe in them so hard that our psyche materializes them.

I have no answers. But I believe in soul mates. Otherwise life would be too gloomy. Keeping the small spark in our hearts is what makes us move forward. And so does the search for our ideal match.
