In their homeland of Tibet, the Tibetan Terriers are known as "holy dogs". This is because they were originally bred and raised in monastaries by the lamas there. They were kept as mascots, companions, herding, and watchdogs. This breed has been around for over two thousand years. The Tibetan Terrier was well-bred for enduring the elements and terrain of Tibet, having a thick double coat and a sturdy composition, but it is not a true terrier at all. The only thing that is terrier about this dog is its medium size.
According to breed standards, the Tibetan Terrier should be powerful, but still agile with a flat, round foot that is much like a snowshoe. The double coat consists of a soft undercoat and an overcoat that can be either curly or straight. The coat should be quite long, but never hang all the way to the ground. There is almost always a part down the center of the back. All colors or color combinations are acceptable. There must also be a flap of hair that hangs in front of the face. This is to protect the dog from the elements. The tail should curl upwards and fall over the back. The acceptable Tibetann Terrier weight falls between eighteen and thirty pounds, with the average being between twenty and twenty-four. The average height is between fourteen and sixteen inches from the withers to the ground.
The Tibetan Terrier is a beautiful dog, with a graceful and effortless gait. As he or she prances about, the hair will swing and the head will be held in a dignified manner. They move efficiently with a nice reach in the front and expansive flexibility in the back. They seem to be fully aware of their attractive and eye-catching looks, as they strut through a show ring. Even in the general public, this dog appears proud and regal. Although they may be slightly reserved with strangers, they should not be overly shy. This is considered a fault in the dog.
They are extremely intelligent and will train easily for the most part. Training should be consistent and not overly harsh, as the Tibetan Terrier is a very sensitive animal that will do better with a kind, but firm, hand. They are also very loyal to their families, making them effective as watchdogs, even though they are not an aggressive or confrontational breed. They are quite affectionate with the people that they know and love, so they should be given plenty of attention. This will also help to avoid a bored dog that can become destructive or be poorly socialized.
The Tibetan Terrier is a wonderful pet for those who have adequate time to devote to him or her. The coat will need to be thoroughly brushed through at least once per week to avoid matting and keep it looking its most healthy best. They are also an active breed that should be walked daily, as well as given some time for off the leash play with you. If you have the time and the love to give a dog, the Tibetan Terrier should definitely be on your list of breeds to consider.
