The Answer to Her Prayers
How many years she'd waited and never once complained;
Her heart's desire had always been a never ending flame
Of love, desire and happiness to come and claim her life,
A partner warm and true and pure who'd take her as his wife.
The years passed by so swiftly, as waiting eyes grew dim,
Her limbs, once long and slender, were now bony and thin;
Gone the dark and wavy hair that once framed her lovely face,
Now a mousy nest of gray had come to take its place.
Daily, she made her face up, and chose her clothes with care,
In hopes some dashing stranger would look and see her there;
He'd sweep her off her dainty feet from the back of his trusty steed,
The woman, old and withered, still dreamed a young girl's dreams.
Then one day she saw him, walking briskly down the thorough fair.
Her Romeo, her Valentine, the answer to her prayers.
Her heart was throbbing in her throat as she dared a timid glance
And seeing that look, he took her hand and bowed as if to dance.
He wasn't dark and brooding, or fair and debonair,
His hairline was receding and thick glasses nestled there
between a pudgy nose and cheeks, red and rough with veins,
And he sported quite a beer gut, beneath his faded jeans.
But outer beauty makes no difference to the very young at heart
Soon the two were married, nevermore to part.
He sees her as his Queen of hearts, the two are quite a pair,
She loves him deep and ardently, the answer to her prayer.
