Thinking of the future is practical. It is how people prepare for their tomorrows, and is a reason for how people choose to spend time in the present. They go to bed early in the evening to wake up for an early morning. Calendars are marked for special dates and appointments. Time is made somewhat predictable when people plan for what they would like to happen, or what usually happens. The future makes time more tangible in this aspect. Like trying to catch time in the palm of their hands by reaching out for time to come.
Imagining the promise of things to come is motivational and useful in keeping one on his or her planned course of action. A course that can take anywhere from the next moment to years later. A negative past and undesirable present, makes the future seem brighter for people waiting and hoping for a better situation. A situation in which only time can change. It can also be scary for those afraid of the unknown. The future means different things to different people, depending on their lives and attitudes. It is sometimes said that children are the future. People who will replace older populations and become the next generations, leaders, and parents. Parents have more children whose lives will repeat the process. In this way, not only can the future be time associated; but it can also seem human.
Time is one of the most influential measurements of life that there is. People wish they could turn it back and make it last. The lack of control over such a thing can be intimidating. The future is time that has yet to come. A look into the possibilities of what can happen, and a way to choose when to make things happen. All one has to do is live life to be faced with the future, a life in which daily routines are established. Lived from moment to moment, in which things happen sooner or later. Things such as meal times, birthdays, and even death are in everyone's future. A time shaped by destiny, uncertainty, and hope.
Looking into the future can be perceived as a power. People look for those whose thoughts can most accurately predict it. This is a practice of psychics, astrologers, and even everyday people, because of the revelations that this measure of time can bring. Time stands still for no one. It cannot be turned back, rushed, or always predicted; but looking forward to a future time makes it unmoved until it comes.
