Maintain your PC and keep it running smoothly With the amount of malware, spy-ware, and viruses on the loose you will need to make sure you have the latest software and updates to keep your machine running smoothly.
Here are some things you can do to ensure your PC's safety and smooth operation:
->Make sure you are updating your PC's weekly! Microsoft usually does their updates on "Patch Tuesday" so a good time to do your updates is Wed or Thurs! Do all the required and then read the descriptions of the other updates. One you may want to do is .NET as it is used by some popular software.
->There are new malware and viruses coming out daily. So don't forget the software to protect you from these nasty buggers.
Here are some of the free software tools I use to combat the malware:
1. malwarebytes - good for those really nasty guys. I've cleaned up many a machine and got it back on track with this great software.
2. I still really like Spybot S&D. Finds those pesky ad-wares and cleans them right up! Make sure you keep it up to date though!
3. I have also been trying out spyware doctor. Not too bad so far. I'll keep you posted on this one!
4. Don't forget the anti-virus too! I recommend AVG, which also has some spy-ware protection built in!
->Don't forget to defrag.
Microsoft's newer Operating systems don't need the defrag as often. I would say once every 3 months should be good. If you are one to constantly install and remove software, however, you may want to run it more frequently. Remember if you loose power during a defrag you can really screw up your computer. So don't do defrag's during a storm or anytime in which the power may go out. It's best if you have a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) attached to your computer just in case.
->Forget the registry cleaners.
People will tell you to either purchase or get a free registry cleaner. I say Don't Do It! I have seen more people ruin their computers by using these. I have fixed many a PC from people who have used these cleaners and have had major issues afterwards. If you are uninstalling your software properly you shouldn't have issues.
-> Reboot weekly at minimum. Many people leave their computers running all the time. This is fine but you will need to reboot at least once a week. It will help clear out the memory and cache and will most likely fix any slowdowns.
-> Fixing slowdowns The biggest complaint I hear is "my computers is running slow". There are many reasons for this but a few simple fixes are: 1. Update your Ram. How much Ram (memory) do you have in your computer? With Microsoft's latest Windows Vista and soon Windows 7 you may need 3 - 4 gigs. Even Windows XP runs better on more Ram. An easy way to find out what is in your computer without having to open it up is to go to: http://crucial.com This site will scan your computer and tell you how much ram you have and will also give you recommendations on what you need to upgrade. Their prices are very competitive, they ship quickly and I have never had a problem with their product.
I hope you find these suggestions helpful to help keep your PC running smoothly.
I have over 10 years experience in the computer field and hold 3 computer certifications. I have found that the above suggestions have proven to keep windows computers running smoothly.
