Assessing the place of television in our lives

by Jason M. Castle

Television is going to change the world...again. Some time in the next five to ten years television and the way in which we watch it will change everything. Just like television did when it was invented it changed the way that the world used the radio, now with the universe of the Internet this is happening again.

"What's the big deal" I keep hearing everybody say. This is the big deal; advertising for a product is the financial driving force behind television. No, cable (and or sat. TV) does not necessarily avoid this with the offering of premium channels that boast "commercial free" broadcasting. The premium channels simply reverse the roles and have to do advertising for them selves, so they are still apart of the "Ad" game.

Advertisement generates sales based off of statistics that are compiled relative to when a product is first introduced threw an add medium and the mean fluctuation of sales within a given time period. The time frame I believe is a financial quarter but I could be wrong. I do not claim to have the expertise in advertising, nor do I need it to prove my point. All you need to do is watch a lot of TV and pay attentions to trends (or work in retail).

This is relevant to the Internet and TV in that most of the net shows that you see are only a few minutes long. There are very few I will boldly go out on a limb and say NO high production value Internet television length shows. This is because the financial people at the big corporate networks do not believe that they can put enough advertisements in front of viewers to keep the people paying for the Ad time without the viewers skipping the advertisements or simply watching something else.

Case in point, you put too many pop-ups on a site and the site will die. Also look at HULU; they have a lot of shows from TV that you can watch if you're willing to wait for commercials that are installed in each show. If you watch HULU (which you should it is a good site www.hulu.com) then you will notice that the placing of these commercials is different almost with every show. That tells me that the network people are still trying to get the "prime time with the internet" thing figured out. The good news about that is that eventually they will work it out.

What we will see is internet TV being the medium by which we watch most of our TV. Some small guy somewhere is going to go get the money and put up an internet movie that is high production value and put the ads in the write place. Then BOOM everybody
